Dukes Promises Awesome Chase Action

According to an article at Filmforce, the new Dukes of Hazzard movie is going to offer some pretty spectacular car crashes and chases.

According to the article, “The crew has one goal in mind: to make this a high-speed, rally-racing, drift-driving, dirt and dust tour de force.”

We’ll see the General Lee pull a 180 amidst a swarm of cop cars, a series of high speed chases, and (for those hoping for something of a retro feel) a few of the trademark Dukes of Hazzard mid-air freeze frames.

The article, written after a visit to the set, also features some information regarding a Johnny Knoxville fight scene, a Willie Nelson and Jessica Simpson duet, and other interesting tidbits about the movie.

The article compares the action in the upcoming Dukes of Hazzard production to the kind of wild fun we’ve seen in movies like Smokey & the Bandit (another Burt Reynolds movie) and The Blues Brothers.

Revealing Look at Daisy Duke Costume

CHUD (that’s Cinematic Happenings Under Development, not Cannabilistic Humanoid Underground Dwellars) ran an article talking about Jessica Simpson’s wardrobe, or lack thereof, in the Dukes of Hazzard movie.

They offer a photo they claim was taken from the set of the Dukes movie of Jessica, in costume as Daisy Duke. She appears to be wearing a bikini top and a pair of shorts smaller than anything Catherine Bach probably ever imagined!

The author at CHUD is really down on the Dukes flick, and claims the pic is “really only going for your most prurient interests,” but if you are curious about how much of Jessica Simpson you’ll be seeing with the movie hits the theaters, check it out.

I noticed that she seems to be a lot less covered up than in other shots from the set I have seen.

Original Cooter Seems Jealous

Ben Jones, who went from Cooter’s garage to Congress, seems a little jealous of the soon-to-be-released Dukes of Hazzard movie, if you ask me!

Jones, who was interviewed back in 2003, when rumors of the production were just starting to circulate, scoffed at the idea of anyone filling the shoes of Bo and Luke—or the shorts of the original Daisy.

According to Jones, "When people think of the Dukes of Hazzard they think of us…Why don't you get Bo Duke to play Bo Duke? Why don't you get Luke Duke to play Luke? Why don't you get Cooter to play Cooter?"

Jones proposed having the original cast members appear as Bo, Luke, et al. and having the younger stars portray “the next generation.”

Jones also issued a warning in the interview: "If they try to do some sort of smart-ass thing, it won't work.”

According to the article, he also (jokingly) mentioned his availability if the producers were looking to cast Cooter.

In addition to showing what might be a big jealous streak in the former Congressman, the article provides a little history about the demise of the original show—after John Schneider and Tom Wopat were replaced following a dispute over product royalties.

John Schneider’s Feelings about The Dukes Movie

John Schneider was recently interviewed about his role on the WB’s Smallville, but ended up fielding a few questions about being a Duke and, of course, about the new movie.

Overall, Schneider seems optimistic about the flick: He says:

“It's been three years since I started answering questions about the pending Dukes of Hazzard movie. I just read the latest draft of it; it's good, and it's very reminiscent of the show. That says to me that the people involved with it are fans of the show and want to do the show they remember, and not do some new fart gag movie for 2005.”

He also doesn’t seem to think Jessica Simpson is gonna fit into Catherine Bach’s Daisy Duke shorts just right. Schneider said he doesn’t believe the new Daisy has really been found and proposes a global search for Bach’s successor.

In addition to those comments about the new movie, Schneider does offer some insight into his old television character and talks about other projects he has in the works.

The Dukes of Hazzard and the Race Issue

The General Lee is named after the noted Confederate and the Duke boys boldly display a Confederate flag atop the car. The story is set in the deep south.

It is no wonder that the issue of race often comes up so often when one mentions the Dukes of Hazzard.

This blog is going to be about the movie. Not about the race issue. I have my own personal perspectives on the matter, but I don’t think this is the proper forum for extended debates over race issues.

I did notice, however, that quite a few people are arguing over the subject at the IMDb message board for the movie. Ref: http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0377818/ I think the quality of the posts there sort of speak for themselves and show why I won’t be going that direction at this blog. But, if you feel like you simply cannot resist discussing these issues with respect to the Dukes, feel free to check them out and add your opinion.

Oh, and by the way, although I won’t let this blog degenerate into a half-baked exposition on race relations, I will make occasional observations on the subject (mainly pointing you to original source materials) if something newsworthy happens on that front.
